On my way home from downtown today, I came across a 7-Eleven that proudly advertised, in multiple windows, its new proffering, "Doritos Loaded". I squinted to get a better look. The item is shaped like a Dorito, appears to have Dorito crumbles on it, but sports a liquid, cheesy center.

More horrible stuff to put into the body! I thought to myself as the bus pulled away from the stop.

Would you eat this thing?

My real question: what's your favorite healthy foodstuff to eat?

I'm just getting into peppers. Do you like them? If so, which are your favorites?

Most of my life, I avoided overly spicy-hot foods (primarily due to an incident when I was three, where I mistook hot sauce for ketchup). Only recently have I decided to delve into the varieties & complexities of hot peppers.

I've tried poblanos, serranos & habeneros. Poblanos feel really laid back to me, somewhat of a jazzed-up bell pepper: some piquancy, but very mild. Serranos, comparatively, have a much brighter, greener flavor & packs far more punch. It's got a nice little bite to it that lets your tongue know it's there. The difference between seeded & not is striking.

I really enjoy the almost floral flavor of habeneros. I will admit that I've never eaten one with the seeds & membrane still intact, so I have not gotten its full intensity of heat. (Peppers are scored by Scoville Heat Units. Bell peppers are 0; serranos are around 6,000; habeneros clock in at 350,000 SHU.) But, seeded, the addition of the peppers to Mexican dishes & even scrambled eggs is a delightful change of pace.

I would have picked up some Anaheim peppers this weekend, but it was obvious the peppers that were available had been sitting out for some time. They'd started to change colors, right on the shelf.

Serious writer's block going on over here.

Some ideas for a couple of poems? Perhaps you have a starting line or a handful of words that seek completion.

I've been instructed recently to observe a heart-healthy diet. In the ensuing near-month, I have done a good job of altering certain elements of my diet, though I still have an inordinate attachment to chocolate.

What's the most unhealthy item in your diet?

What do you think about pancakes?

By the way, pancake derives from placenta, which in Latin means 'cake'. This puts a new spin on the colloquialism "a bun in the oven".

My project to transfer my CD collection to my laptop is nearly completed. I have a few titles packed up from my last major move--somewhere (maybe my sister's basement). I really miss those albums: it wasn't until I commenced with this project that I realized how much not having Beck's Guero & Midnite Vultures leaves a hole in my library.

I have over 115 different artists represented. I love being able to see how eclectic my collection really is. Kronos Quartet sidles alongside Karyn White, Kool Moe Dee, L.T.D., Led Zeppelin, Lionel Richie, Live, Lorenna McKennitt & Luther Vandross. Peabo Bryson & Pearl Jam rest side by side, as do Space Ghost & Steely Dan. Afro Celt Sound System & Al Jarreau start the alphabet, where Yanni & Yo-Yo Ma represent the close.

Is your music library varied, or do you tend to stick to a small handful of genres?

How is it possible that, when copying tracks from my Tracy Chapman CD onto my hard drive, the music that comes up and overlays is "Paperback Writer" by the Beatles?

Well, playing back the track that was in question ("New Beginning"), the superimposition seems to have vanished.

That was strange.

The cover of this month's Sculpture Magazine* is incredibly suggestive, in my opinion. What does it remind you of?

When I first walked by it in the library, I had to do a double-take.

I've finished Aristotle's Poetics, although I need to go back through it and really evaluate the footnotes and appendices. Currently, I'm fairly deep into Dante's Inferno. On deck: Paradise Lost.

(I'm not terribly pleased with the translation of Inferno that I possess [by John Sinclair]; it's rendered into prose instead of trying to emulate the Italian versification. Can anyone suggest an English translation that retains the poetry of the work?)

If you attended a movie in the theater this year, which one was your favorite?

By the end of this month, I will have had thirty-one appointments. This does not count what my family will do for Christmas or whether I will spend time with my parents during their anniversary on New Year's Eve. (Heck, I don't even know if I'm attending a party that evening.)

January is crazily blank, so far.

How are your schedules shaping up for the end of the year and beyond?
