novapsyche: a woman of stature circa 1900s peering out of a ring (womanring)
Countdown is no more.

Josh Marshall of Talking Points Memo was a guest Friday night & had this to say.

Dear MSNBC:

I understand that you need to enforce journalistic standards & have in turn suspended Keith Olbermann without pay due to his donations to three Democratic candidates. As a network, you need to avoid the perception that you are anything but impartial. As a consumer of your news, I respect your process.

However, Keith Olbermann is the main reason I watch MSNBC on a daily basis. While he is out of your lineup, I will refrain from viewing any shows on your network. I would not be surprised if I am not the only Countdown fan who will adopt such a stance.

If you care about fairness, at least come to a decision about how long Mr. Olbermann's suspension will be, and communicate that length to MSNBC viewers. It is not as if he were an NFL player who issued a helmet-to-helmet hit.

Sincerely,

I had a very long dream sequence last night, but the one memorable thing was kissing Keith Olbermann full on the mouth. Wow.

& that was after he saved septuplets in the womb.

. . . made a hilarious verbal misstep.

Instead of 'Sarah Palin', her tongue made an alveolar lateral & produced . . . Sailor Palin!

I think she'd fit right in! Give her some pigtails & a 5" skirt. She can use her old flute as a baton. She knows how to wink aggressively (no lessons needed there), & she may already own a tiara.

Also, if you thought Serena made some ditzy comments . . . .

Rep. Lynn Jenkins of Kansas: 'Great white hope' comment not about Obama

See [livejournal.com profile] supergee's poll from earlier today on the topic.

Edit: Keith Olbermann's first full comments on the matter: "Why don't you just get a hood?"

Ehhh??!

So I was watching the news after the VP debate, and several stations showed a clip from McCain praising Palin's performance. In this particular clip, in front of supporters, every time he finished a sentence he interjected a high-toned, nasal "Ehh?!!"

The very first time I heard this, I thought, "He sounds like the Penguin."

I don't know if the person who created the macro seen here in [livejournal.com profile] ljdemocrats saw the same clip, but I can only presume so.

Olbermann also mimicked him during that night's newscast.

(FOX story here.)

MSNBC says Olbermann, Matthews won't anchor -- The folks at MSNBC are timid. Matthews and Olbermann have been their chief political anchors for over a year, for the entirety of the Democratic primary season as well as the Republican one. Sad.

Newspaper: Black reporter booted from McCain rally -- Mr. Price, the reporter in question, was interviewed by Olbermann last night. What this article fails to mention is, there weren't any national press at the event, only local ones, and that none of the other local reporters were asked to leave except for the one who stood up for Mr. Price.

Tom Brokaw has been fielding Meet the Press much as Russert would have--that is, as though he did not share an office with Keith Olbermann.

The questions he asked of the Obama campaign to Sen. Kerry (this is playing right now on NBC and will rerun on MSNBC later) are coming from the perspective of someone who is right-wing or conservative, not neutral. The bias is embedded in the question: "Didn't Obama mean, by saying he wasn't like others on the dollar bills, that 'they're picking on me because I'm black'?"

Also, Brokaw said that McCain's campaign "immediately" responded to Obama's phrasing, even though Obama first started saying something similar (and, as Keith pointed out twice this week, much stronger) six weeks ago.

I shut my TV off. I can't listen to that right now--cognitive dissonance too much.

This seems like a hit piece. Keith is this phenomenon that the people in the media don't know how to take or to handle.

Instead of talking about how Countdown has overtaken his competition in his time slot, or how he has really buoyed MSNBC (a few sentences here and there mention this), Mr. Boyer instead decides to take the slant of how do other newsmen see Olbermann, and OMG what might his success mean for broadcast journalism?

Boyer makes sure that at least two people have called Keith "crazy."

McCain rejects pastor's endorsement

McCain had resisted calls to repudiate Mr. Hagee for months. However, once it leaked yesterday that Hagee had said that God sent Adolf Hitler to help Jews reach the promised land, it was only a matter of time.

This is an issue that Olbermann has been following closely, so I would expect to see this at the top of the hour or, at the least, the #4 story of the evening (he counts down backwards).

Ben Stein: "science leads you to killing people" (thanks, [livejournal.com profile] sttatus_quo)

Edit: Olbermann included Stein in his roundup of Worst Persons this evening (Friday).

Olbermann reported tonight that Nelson Mandela is on the US' international terrorism list.

Countdown reports that Obama's passport data was compromised at the State Department. The State Department has confirmed that it fired two contract employees and disciplined a third employee at the Office of Consular Affairs.

The Obama campaign apparently was just notified about this breach today, but the State Department has known since January.

Ah, Condi's State Department. Surely everything is on the up and up there.

She's in the race only for her ego. Shades of Lieberman, actually.

Clinton Says She and McCain Offer Experience, Obama Offers Speeches

DailyKos diary on topic | DKos diary re: Olbermann's view

Any candidate who really wanted the Democratic party to take the White House would see that the tactics Clinton is employing run counter to that goal. She is perfectly happy to tarnish her rival, which plays into the hands of their mutual opponent. This is what one would call, if she were to succeed, a Pyrrhic victory.

Last night, Olbermann flatly compared Bush to Beavis.

The similarity? Their laugh.

He was referencing Bush's remark about civil liberties during yesterday's press conference.

Here's an example of Bushspeak (our version of Doublespeak--at least Eric Blair's language still conformed to the rules of syntax):

Q But the political context --

THE PRESIDENT: You're trying to get me to be the pundit again. Look, you all figure that out. I mean, we've -- what I'm dealing with is the situation at hand, and I appreciate that -- both Democrats and Republicans in the United States Congress and Senate for getting this bill done very quickly. And it's a substantial piece of legislation, and it's a good sign that we can figure out how to cooperate with each other at times.

And so we'll see the effects of this pro-growth package. I know there's a lot of -- here in Washington, people are trying to -- stimulus package two and all that stuff. Why don't we let stimulus package one, which seemed like a good idea at the time, have a chance to kick in?

more excerpts )

This was the money quote:

Q You can get the Congress to protect telecom companies from lawsuits, but then there's no recourse for Americans who feel that they've been caught up in this. I know it's not intended to spy on Americans, but in the collection process, information about everybody gets swept up and then it gets sorted. So if Americans don't have any recourse, are you just telling them, when it comes to their privacy, to suck it up?

THE PRESIDENT: I wouldn't put it that way, if I were you, in public. Well, you've been long been long enough to -- anyway, yes, I -- look, there's -- people who analyze the program fully understand that America's civil liberties are well protected. There is a constant check to make sure that our civil liberties of our citizens aren't -- you know, are treated with respect. And that's what I want, and that's what most -- all Americans want.

The transcript doesn't reflect it, but there was a snicker between "yes" and "look". (Laughter, presumably general, is reflected elsewhere.) Edit: Here is the Countdown excerpt.
