Jun. 17th, 2007 05:51 pmI was knocking around Amazon, learning more about Ronnie Laws (one of my dad's favorite jazz artists), and I came across one of my favorite titles from my childhood: Solid Ground. When I was seven or eight, I used to listen to this while I played. I made up lyrics for the instrumental pieces.
I bought it when I found it on CD. I can't tell you when that was: I believe it was sometime after college, because I don't recall playing it when I had my radio shows on KDIC. Seeing it on Amazon, I wanted to rate it up so that others would know how good it is. Then I noticed how much it was selling for.
Apparently it's out of print. I'm not used to CDs going out of print--most of the CDs in my collection are popular and so are reprinted often. It's odd to think that I have a $50 CD in my collection. Especially when I didn't pay that much for it. And I didn't buy it as a collector; I just wanted to listen to music I've long enjoyed.

The Reagan years.
Jun. 6th, 2004 11:26 pmI can't take pleasure in anyone's death. And, after the media blitz of this weekend, maybe I do feel a little bad about Reagan's passing. Maybe that's the point of all these newscasts.
But I do feel sad, because I feel it is a chapter of my life coming to a symbolic close. As I was born in 1975, I don't have any memories of a Carter White House. All of my childhood memories that I generally have access to took place during the Reagan years.
Many people are taking the time to complain about how awful those years really were. I don't doubt it. But I don't remember it. I was seven years old when the big recession hit. What was I doing? I was fawning over Prince and Michael Jackson.
The Reagan years may have been sucky for adults, but in my opinion was relatively great for kids. Ours was the first generation to get video games and computers. And the music was kid friendly.
