In your opinion, what was the scariest movie you saw in the '80s? (Alternatively, if you were too young to remember any movies in the '80s, what '80s movie have you seen since then do you consider the scariest?)
Without a doubt, the '80s movie that scared me the most was E.T. I realize this is pretty unusual, but it haunted me for years. Seriously, I had nightmares about E.T. until I was 9 or so.
Does it have to have been made during the eighties, or do we just have to have seen it for the first time during the eighties? If the first, Pet Sematary, but only the scenes with the sister. The second, no contest: Johnny Got His Gun.
Poltergeist, hands down. I was terrified of that movie.
Someone else mentioned Pet Sematary. I remember thinking it was far too cheesy to be remotely scary. My cousin and I saw it at the theatre and kept laughing at it, pissing off people around us. :P
I'm totally chicken to see a real horror movie even today but I was over at someone's apartment when they watched "Silence of the Lambs" -- boy, that freaked me right out-nightmares for months. Honestly, I had no idea, movies could be so scary....
I didn't get to see movies until I left home and went away to college, so I didn't see any in the 70's growing up. They were banned. I didn't have a VCR or cable in the 80's, so the theater was my only option and I was absolutely terrified to see real "HORROR" movies. Now, my husband agrees that they would not be a "good thing"--- Sincerely, middle-aged scaredy cat
I'm way too easy to scare with scary movies, so I rarely watched them when I was younger. P. loves watching scary movies with me because I jump and scream.
I'm still trying to decide among Christine, Poltergeist, and John Carpenter's The Thing. In retrospect, I think Poltergeist would be the winner, but at the timeThe Thing scared me silly.

I'm just glad I never saw "Threads."
