Dean, Gephardt, Kerry Battle It Out in Iowa

The article, despite its title, speaks quite a bit about John Edwards. He's described as the "dark horse" candidate. I think he's the best shot the Democrats have of unseating Bush. Edwards has what the none of the other candidates have (excepting the Rev. Sharpton, of course): charisma.

Add to that the fact that he's a Southern Democrat (that is, an "electable Democrat"), and that's another point in his favor.

This isn't to say that I'm 100% behind him; there were some answers he gave to questions in early debates that gave me pause. I haven't been able to see much of the more recent debates, but I'm sure there were some things he stands for that I don't approve.

But that does not detract from the fact that it will take a charismatic candidate to unseat Bush.

Here's an interesting article about Edwards, written right when he entered the race.

Edwards has one thing that the other candidates don't have: links in the South. The Democrats will not win, period, without a candidate who will be credible in the South. Edwards has also been firmly pushing himself as a popularist, his message should resonate with the anti-corporate attitude that pervades a lot of the Old South. And yes, he does have charisma.

He hasn't gotten a lot of attention from the media, and it's always interesting to note what the media DOESN'T say in addition to what it does.

It helps that:

1) He's boyishly cute, like JFK in a way.

2) He's independently wealthy. He can afford those effective TV commercials.

3) He's "fresh", as having served only one term in the House. He's politically knowledgeable, but he's also not so mired as your typical "career politician". (This is a point his campaign should play up, in my opinion.)

4) He's young. Gen Xers want to vote for someone who is at least in the age group to be sympathetic to their viewpoint.
