My dreams were so involved yesterday, so much so that I don't remember very much of them. I can recall the last bit of my dream, which involved using books for some esoteric purpose. When a friend and I went to pay for these books, somehow they became extraordinarily overdue library books. For the two, I suddenly had fines in excess of $160.

My odd subconscious.

If 9/11 didn't happen, would we have gone to war and invaded Iraq anyway?

What Would You Ask Condoleezza Rice?

One article I read today stated that in Iraq it's getting harder to figure out who's part of the militia and who's simply a civilian.

When that happens, everyone becomes the enemy. Who, then, have the armies been sent to save?

ABC, NBC and CBS said they would go live at 9 a.m. EDT on Thursday to broadcast the appearance, which comes amid controversy over whether she failed to focus on the threat posed by al Qaeda in the weeks before the Sept. 11 2001 attacks on the world Trade Center and the Pentagon.

A Fox News spokesman said they would offer their coverage to affiliates to air at their discretion.

The Republicans will have to challenge the neocons. There's no way for liberals to do it, because they'll just paint them as "liberals" (what a slur). No, the conservatives will need to confront their own minority view that happens to wield power. If that power is allowed to continue unchecked, that means that the conservatives have resigned themselves to the neocons' platform.

If this administration survives the vote this year, that's the message the conservatives will send to the neocons.

This is the time to question their politics. This is a small minority trying to pass itself off as being representative of a large part of the populace. Conservatives have to tend to their own values (tradition, and traditionally conservatives have favored smaller government), and they need to do so now.

I saw these when they broadcast earlier this week. They're worth a look. (As someone living in Michigan, I can't get away from the ads.)

The Unborn Victims of Violence Act (UVVA) creates a federal law making it a crime to cause harm to a "child in utero," recognizing everything from a zygote to a fetus as an independent "victim," with legal rights distinct from the woman who has been attacked. More than 30 states already have similar laws on the books. In practice, these laws treat the pregnant woman as little more than collateral damage in an attack portrayed to the public as one directed against the fetus. Moreover, pregnant women in states with such laws are more likely to be punished for behaviors and conditions that are not criminally sanctioned for other members of society.

Paradoxically, the UVVA does not make it a federal crime to attack pregnant women, and its sponsors explicitly rejected proposals to protect the woman herself under federal law. And yet homicide is the number-one killer of pregnant women.
