1. John F. Kennedy was shot (11/22/1963)?
My oldest sibling wasn't even born.
2. Mt. St. Helens blew (05/18/1980)?
I would have been five. I kind of remember hearing about a volcano going off, but it didn't seem all that unusual to me.
3. When the space shuttle Challenger exploded (01/28/1986)?
I was in fourth grade. When the news hit, the principal let students who wanted to watch the news coverage to go down to the library and watch it there.
4. When the 7.1 earthquake hit San Francisco (10/7/1989)?
I don't remember this as an event. I was a teenager discovering her sexual prowess.
5. When the Berlin Wall fell (11/7/1989)?
I was in front of the television. This happened late at night EST--11 p.m. or midnight, if I recall. I was definitely gladdened by what I was seeing on the screen. (That might even have been a Thursday. Or maybe Wednesday, because I had some American government class on Thursday and I knew we'd be discussing that event. Memory's fuzzy.)
6. When the Gulf War began (1/16/1991)?
I was in school. During the first Gulf War, I wore anti-war buttons to school, every day of combat.
7. When the first World Trade Center bombing happened (02/26/1993)?
I was in high school. This was two days after my eighteenth birthday. I honestly don't remember this as a major event. How sad is that? Let's see. That year my birthday fell on a Monday, so that would have been Wednesday. But I can't puzzle anything else out. I was probably participating in some extracurricular activity, as I was wont to do.
8. When OJ Simpson was chased in his White Bronco (6/17/1994)?
I remember this only retroactively. I wasn't around a television that day, and for the life of me, I can't remember why. That was when I was crashing on Gypsy's couch, though, that summer.
9. When the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City was bombed (4/19/1995)?
I was in college. Living in Iowa, the news hit hard.
10. When Princess Di was killed (8/31/1997)?
In my dorm's computer lab. I said, "It's too bad that Mother Teresa's death will be overshadowed by Di's death."
11. When Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold opened fire on their classmates at Columbine High School (4/20/1999)?
I had to have been at work at Acosta Sales & Marketing. (There are some friends who still send me email to my Acosta address. I haven't worked there since 1999. :)
12. When Bush was first announced President (11/7/2000)?
I was in my living room. The controversy over the votes was raging over the airwaves. I later went into work at Wells Fargo and we talked about it openly. Des Moines is a fairly open city, politically speaking. That is, you're free to speak your mind.
13. When the 6.8 earthquake hit Nisqually, WA (2/28/2001)?
I don't remember.
14. When terrorists destroyed the World Trade Center (9/11/2001)?
I was in bed with F. His mother came downstairs and woke us up with the news. I was glued to the television and the web all day.
15. When Columbia disintegrated during re-entry over Texas (2/1/2003)?
In my bedroom, watching it on television as it happened.
My oldest sibling wasn't even born.
