N.C. judge rejects teen's 'queer' slogan

I really don't think that if I ran for student body president with the slogan "Vote for the black girl!" that there would have been too much said about that.

It depends upon the connotation...If I thought you were seriously trying to get elected on the merit of race, I would not vote for you. But I would whole-heartedly defend your right to campaign in such a manner if you so foolishly thought to do so.

Well, that's fine. But I don't think my principal would have seen fit to remove the signs. (And, in college, I think anything goes.)

I think the clincher is that race is visible, while sexual orientation--that is, sexual orientation that isn't heterosexual--is invisible until one speaks about it. What the principal seems to be saying is, "Keep it in the closet."

*laugh*

The makeup of my high school was about 7-10% black, if I'm estimating correctly. Most of us were bussed there.

Well, I think another concern is this- In high school, the word "queer" is inappropriate language.
Furthurmore, topics of sex, or anything obliquely referencing them, are also tabboo. The principal may not care if the kid is gay or not.. hard to say. If you had concocted some clever rhyming racial slur to put on your posters to get yourself elected, he probably would have had them taken down.
*chuckles*
If he were in the know, he might even object to "Once you've had black, you'll never go back."
Just another way of looking at the whole thing. :)

Would me running on a campaign of being a heterosexual necessarily be considered "a topic of sex"?

Talking about sexual orientation and talking about sex are not the same thing.

*furrows his brow*
Though I agree that a conversation about sexual orientation (especially if it is a political one) and sex itself are different, it has been my experience that the school system rarely sees the distinction between the two. At my schools at least, they probably would have asked you to change the content of your posters had they said to vote for you in reference to your heterosexual choice.
*shrugs*
Or maybe not.. Principal might just be a small minded hick. :p
