Date: 2004-04-28 12:58 pm (UTC)I think the clincher is that race is visible, while sexual orientation--that is, sexual orientation that isn't heterosexual--is invisible until one speaks about it. What the principal seems to be saying is, "Keep it in the closet."

Date: 2004-04-30 06:24 am (UTC)Furthurmore, topics of sex, or anything obliquely referencing them, are also tabboo. The principal may not care if the kid is gay or not.. hard to say. If you had concocted some clever rhyming racial slur to put on your posters to get yourself elected, he probably would have had them taken down.

If he were in the know, he might even object to "Once you've had black, you'll never go back."
Just another way of looking at the whole thing. :)

Date: 2004-04-30 06:42 pm (UTC)Though I agree that a conversation about sexual orientation (especially if it is a political one) and sex itself are different, it has been my experience that the school system rarely sees the distinction between the two. At my schools at least, they probably would have asked you to change the content of your posters had they said to vote for you in reference to your heterosexual choice.

Or maybe not.. Principal might just be a small minded hick. :p
