I'm back from social hour. It was okay.

One of my coworkers made a comment that is hard to explain without the back story, but basically she made a jab that I, of course, swallowed while responding with kindness.

Another coworker (who gets along well with me) took me home, and during the ride I plainly said, "I don't think Judy likes me."

"Why do you say that?" she asked. So I explained the back story and summed it up by saying, "I may be poor, but I'm not stupid."

Maybe that should be my new motto.

Edit: Check the comments for the back story.

*sigh* Okay.

A few weeks ago, one of the bosses decided to buy lunch for everyone in the office. Everyone thought pizza would be a good idea. The person responsible for finding out what toppings everyone wanted came to me, and I told her that I'd also like a submarine for myself. I said I'd take it home. I thought it was clear that I wanted this in addition to what was being purchased. I offered to pay for this, and my coworker told me not to worry about it.

So lunchtime rolls around and I see that there's a large pizza and a small pizza, and my sub. I'm thinking, Hmm, this isn't going to be enough for fifteen people. I shrug and get my slice of pizza.

Another coworker (Judy) comes in after about twenty minutes. By this time, the rest of us have gotten our pizza, and there really was not enough to go around. She motions to the sub and says, "What's this?" She goes to reach for it. I pick it up and explain that this is my sub that I planned to take home.

She threw up her hands and said something (my memory isn't the best--God I wish I could remember exactly what she said). It was apparent that she thought I was being greedy. This bothered me very much that day, moreso when I got home. The next day, I felt I had I speak about the whole thing to another coworker (Ben, the one I'd consider a friend outside the office, too). He agreed that there seemed to have been some miscommunication and misunderstandings, but assured me that it probably wasn't anything to get upset about.

So, last night, we're ordering our drinks and one of my coworkers gets two orders of pretzels. I got an order of onion rings--originally for myself only, because I knew I'd get hungry while drinking. When they arrived, however, I realized that there was no way I could eat all of them, so I offered them to the rest of the table.

Eventually, the waiter comes by after we've attacked the appetizers and are on our second round of drinks. He asks us if he could take the remains of our food away, and I indicate that I'm done with the onion rings--there weren't that many left, and they were getting cold. The coworker who drove me home (Amy) contradicted me and told the waiter to leave the onion rings there. We laughed about that, then Judy said, "Oh, I thought Janann would be taking those home." I immediately said no; simultaneously two of my other coworkers, who work in the same department as Judy, snickered.

Like I say, I may be poor (which is why I order food at work and take it home to eat later), but I'm not stupid. I know when someone is talking down to me.
