Reward is more effective than punishment, and a system that focuses on punishment rather than reward is often a system with extensive problems.

That said, I've never experienced it myself, nor witnessed it, and from what I understand, 'they' don't really know how or why it works - but it seems to, at least for some people.
As with all medical care, it should be chosen by the patient with informed consent - in other words, not forced or coerced upon them.
Anyway - I will try to come back & read these articles later... thanks, as always, for your interesting and thought-provoking links!
