The whole thing is muddled by the fact that the term "shock treatment" is usely used to cover almost anything involving electricity.

One really can't tell from the article what was done and whether it was problematic or not, although it certainly sounds quite troubling.

Reward is more effective than punishment, and a system that focuses on punishment rather than reward is often a system with extensive problems.

I've been told, after spouting off my distaste for something so primitive, that modern shock treatment is "better", uses lower rates of shock, less aftereffects, etc. I still think its barbaric. My question is, is this the best we can do? I think not.

Alas, I don't have time to read the articles just now, but I do want to speak up and say that modern ECT (electro-convulsive therapy) is actually a good thing that helps a lot of folks with intractable depression and people who, for whatever reason, can't take medication.

It's helped my aunt, who has severe depression, on several occasions.

That said, I've never experienced it myself, nor witnessed it, and from what I understand, 'they' don't really know how or why it works - but it seems to, at least for some people.

As with all medical care, it should be chosen by the patient with informed consent - in other words, not forced or coerced upon them.

Anyway - I will try to come back & read these articles later... thanks, as always, for your interesting and thought-provoking links!
