Last week, our governor, Jennifer Granholm, squared off against her challenger, Dick DeVos, in a televised debate. This is one of the closest gubernatorial races in the country: Granholm holds a slim 6-point advantage over Mr. DeVos.

I didn't watch the debate in its entirety, primarily because it was held during the same time block as Countdown. However, what I did see seemed to underscore how differently the two candidates hold themselves. Granholm has a polished delivery and a meticulous image; DeVos, on the other hand, seemed smarmy and slick. It also didn't help him to be positioned right next to Granholm, who is obviously taller than he is.

(For those of you who are not familiar with Michigan politics, DeVos is the son of the co-founder of the AmWay corporation.)

The papers the next day didn't seem to evaluate the debate to determine a winner but rather characterized the debate itself as "nasty."

How are the races going in your part of the country, and do you plan to vote this year?

To answer in reverse order, yellow-dog Democrat, and mostly shoo-ins. The Repugs in NY are in disarray. The open & notorious adulterer beat out the nut to run against Hillary. Why did the DA (who is running for state attorney general) wiretap the Mafioso? To see if he was cheating on her. It's a laff a minute.

The DFL (Democratic-Farmer-Labor; by now there's nothing of the Farmer-Labor Party in the merged party, but the name continues) candidate for Minnesota 5th Congressional District had ties to the Nation of Islam. He also has a record of not paying taxes and tickets on time.

The Republican candidate turns out to have been arrested (but not tried) for domestic violence. His arrest was expunged; but the Minneapolis Star-Tribune got hold of records. He and his ex-wife have different stories.

The DFL candidate will almost certainly win. Minneapolis is a city where the fire chief is a lesbian, and the second party on the City Council is Greens rather than Republicans. The rest of the Fifth District isn't as Democratic or as far left, but it's still not prime Republican territory.
