Oct. 9th, 2006 03:18 pmLast week, our governor, Jennifer Granholm, squared off against her challenger, Dick DeVos, in a televised debate. This is one of the closest gubernatorial races in the country: Granholm holds a slim 6-point advantage over Mr. DeVos.
I didn't watch the debate in its entirety, primarily because it was held during the same time block as Countdown. However, what I did see seemed to underscore how differently the two candidates hold themselves. Granholm has a polished delivery and a meticulous image; DeVos, on the other hand, seemed smarmy and slick. It also didn't help him to be positioned right next to Granholm, who is obviously taller than he is.
(For those of you who are not familiar with Michigan politics, DeVos is the son of the co-founder of the AmWay corporation.)
The papers the next day didn't seem to evaluate the debate to determine a winner but rather characterized the debate itself as "nasty."
How are the races going in your part of the country, and do you plan to vote this year?
