Widespread Ignorance

Only 28 percent of Americans believe in evolution; 68 percent believe in Satan. And since Bush's endorsement of 'intelligent design,' the battle between faith and reason is growing stronger.

I believe in Satan, and I believe he recently came out in favor of teaching unintelligent design in schools.

(side note: I would very, very much like to see where that 28% figure came from; I'd like to know, at the same time I dread, that it's not some sort of overly skewed figure. That can't be right. It just can't.)

Yeah, that's my reaction, too...where ARE these people. Kinda like finding the 51% that voted for Bush. Almost like they only live inside a little black box...

Oh, no. The 51% are well in evidence all around me... I live in Ohio. We had quite a few Kerry bumper stickers, but there are a whole lot of W'04s as well. (Amusingly, most of them seem to have sprung up after the election, because they were quite scarce before it...)

I really like that last sentence, which implies that faith and reason are mutually incompatible.

If you like that, you should read Kierkegaard.

We're really sunk when the faithful can't be reasonable.

I have got to get out of this quite litterally stupid country.

Its quite interesting to see the gradual decline and fall of the US Empire, and soon economic collapse that is likely to occur.
And yes I dont live there so its an academic interest to see how bad it will get.

They believe that both Satan and evolution led to the current ecology. Sounds about right, innit?

I'm dying to know whence cometh that 28% stat, too. I mean, believe in Satan all you want, but if only a generous quarter of we USians believe in evolution, then...well, fuck a duck. That's terrifying.

Maybe another 60% think believing in evolution is as dumb as believing in trees--or maybe the Scientologists (http://www.xenu.net) muddled with the results.
