I called up an old colleague of mine, and we've set a lunch date for tomorrow at Bennigan's. I haven't seen him in months; it'll be nice to catch up.

I got a great buy at Barnes & Noble last night: a laminated quick chart of the nervous system. All that information for less than $5! I have a much better idea of what neurological structures sidle next to others, and how the entire system is networked.

Tonight I have an appointment with a woman who is a practitioner of Hellerwork Structural Integration, to assess what might be going on with my joints. I would go to a regular doctor, but my insurance doesn't start until August, and I would like to have some idea of what's going on before I get standard treatment. Besides, this way I won't have a pre-existing medical condition, not officially, anyway.

Is it...um. Ben? I can't remember his name. The guy I met? If so, tell him I said hi.

Also, did you see one of those quick charts for the muscular system?

Hope your appointment this evening goes well. *hugs*

I was thinking just this morning that I should have picked up something on the musculoskeletal system. Next time.

And yes, it is Ben! :) I will say hi for you.

*hugs*

Is Hellerwork something like, or related to, Rolfing?

According to the practitioner, yes. Heller was a student of the Rolf technique but diverged, believing that one's emotional and mental health may have a role in one's muscular tension and posture. (I didn't know any of this until yesterday.)

That seems pretty common sense. I know my shoulders go up around my ears when I'm feeling stressed out. And when you pull one part of your body out of alignment, it's going to affect other parts. If I don't keep my hamstrings stretched out, my lower back gets twinges, and if I ignore the twinges, it gives me nasty pain until I stretch my legs and back out!

Did you find your visit to her helpful?

Yes and no. She was a great listening ear and gave me more of an idea of what may be going wrong (she thinks it's my ligaments that's giving me trouble; she said my wrists just felt loose, like the bones weren't getting any support). At the same time, she said explicitly that I should see a doctor and get bloodwork done, to find out what's going on internally. The parts she worked on felt more relaxed after the session, but I don't feel much of a difference today.

I know you believe that I was probably throwing away perfectly good money, but I needed to find out what her services could and could not address. And now I know! And knowing is half the battle.

I skeptical but don't know enough about it to comment one way or the other. If it gave you some peace of mind, then the money isn't wasted.
