I hate my job.

So I'm thinking about approaching my boss to make my position permanent.

I have several reasons for doing so, but one of them is that I figure if I'm paid enough, I'll feel more tolerant about how tedious everything is.

The business is incredibly small and is in need of more help. I'm hoping they'd give me more interesting responsibilities after a while.

Just remember: if everything falls apart at once you can always go to Vegas to be Steven Brust's Slave. He needs one that can be his business assistant too... ;)

but seriously, you're smart and should have an interesting job. How much recent experience do you have now? at least a year, right? you should be able to leverage that, now.
