Tired of the pope coverage, I flipped to CSPAN last night and came across the committee meeting yesterday for the confirmation of John Bolton. I have to say it was the most riveting thing I've seen on television in quite a while. It was amazing to see that this is my government in action.

Lugar really was trying to strongarm the committee into taking a vote immediately to send the nomination to the Senate floor. One of the senators said he was "truncating" debate; "stifling" would have been a better word. Thank goodness for good people like Dodd and Biden, and also Voinovich, who was the reasoned and principled conservative voice of the day.

Voinovich was a pleasant surprise, wasn't he?

My favorite quote from the whole thing was from Lincoln Chafee:

"I don't know if I've ever seen, in a setting like this, a senator changing his mind as a result of what other senators said," Mr. Chafee said. "The process worked. It's kind of refreshing."

Nice to see a Senator go on the record to admit that all the hearings they hold are shams. :P

The folks over at Daily Kos seemed to think he hung himself politically yesterday. I didn't see his participation, so I don't know what he said. I came late to the broadcast.
