Thank goodness. I was debating this with some co-workers this morning. It's not just me being squeamish because I'm a cat-lover. It just seems like it'd have a lot of unintended consequences.
Well, and as a "solution" to the problem the DNR proposed it for, it wouldn't really be effective. The central issue here is irresponsible pet ownership, which created the feral cat problem in the first place, and would continue to keep the population going no matter how many animals get shot. When people don't get their animals fixed, their animals reproduce, and there aren't enough adoptive homes to go around. (Don't get me STARTED on people who buy animals from pet stores, or even intentional breeders.) Furthermore, the proposed definition of "feral cat" was far too general; even in Minnesota, where they have such a law, cats must be uncollared AND "fail to show friendly behavior" (this, of course, highlights how ridiculous a judgment call it is to make, but at least makes some effort to prevent the killing of outdoor pets).
I'm so relieved. I think I will write Governor Doyle a letter of support.
