I'm not glad to see that she's dead. I just wish she'd had different ideas about feminism and that she hadn't had so much hold on radical feminism as it's currently practiced.
It's precisely *because* of her hold on radical feminism and the way she's (in some camps) turned the word "feminist" into a synonym for "man-hater" that I'm glad she's dead. Now perhaps someone reasonable can take up the feminist torch and help usher in equality rather than a new reich. Equality in both intent AND the law, because laws are lagging far behind intent, and in some cases overshooting by a mile. A lot of that imbalance is her fault.
Considering the public's penchant for canonizing any public figure who dies, my guess is that some white-washing of Dworkin's more radical stances may occur in the near future. What effect that might have on radical feminism, and in particular its [mis]association with man-hating, is still unknown.
I don't think it can be all heaped on her shoulders. Lots of other wacko militant feminists like Catherine McKinnon and Mary Daly helped turn "feminism" into a synonym for "man-hater."
But, yeah.
This is the third person on my LJ to mention her passing; it's interesting because I was under the impression that most people under about 40 have no idea or only a vague idea who she is.
I think I've read at least 3-4 of her books, and some books by her male companion/husband, John S. Now HE is an interesting gender-traitor fellow.
Hmm.. Ive never heard of her before, but she sounds like she impeccably embodied everything I dislike about militant feminism. Feminists like her made it politically correct to hate. I dont really have any words to say on her death, other then to remark at the sadness of being on your deathbed with a great hatred burning inside you. Thats a terrible shame, I hope she has found some peace now that she is travelling beyond gender identity. Interesting article. ~Zeph Misogynist~ :p
