I was awakened last night by the neighbor's dog barking at around 2:30. This neighbor is closer than most, as I live in a duplex. The dog sounds like it is (and it is) right in the next room.
Soon after, I also heard loud voices, primarily that of a young woman. Not that I meant to eavesdrop, but it's kind of hard to avoid when people are yelling. Apparently her boyfriend (the person who ostensibly came home) had cheated on her. At least, that was her honest belief, as she screamed it several times. Items were thrown against the wall, and the dog got worked up.
At times, I could hear the guy try to calm her down. "I wasn't cheating on you," he'd say. But the way he said it, I wouldn't believe him if I were her, either. It was like he was trying to soothe a child who'd lost her favorite balloon. Not very convincing. She told him they were over, called him names, threw more things against the wall. The strength of her venom, it was amazing.
My dad caught me as I was walking out the door this morning to ask if I'd heard the commotion. "Yeah," I said. He said he was going to go over there and talk to the neighbors about it, and I said, "It's probably not going to happen again, if they've broken up." My dad thought about it, and then recalled that he did see the guy pack up his things and leave. "Yeah, so there's really nothing to discuss," I said.
I am tired and my eyes tell me I haven't gotten enough sleep. But what can one do?
