I am a horrible first line of defense; and I keep bothering people who are "swamped" over things that I should, as the receptionist, be able to figure out myself.
If they haven't given you the info in a neat, easy to access place - then you do what you have to to get the info - including bothering those swamped ppl.
Believe me this does not make you a bad receptionist. The fact that you try not to is proof enough.
