For me, it was kind of expected, yet kind of out of the blue. Who expects to get laid off on a Monday?
But yeah, the company I've been working for has seen its profits shrink amazingly in the last two years. I'm the third employee they've let go in one way or another in the last six weeks.
My boss stuck his face in my cube and asked me if I'd see him in his office. By the look on his face, we were either going to discuss my hiring or firing.
But I've not been fired. I've been let go. So, at the very worst (no assignments at my current agency), I'll be collecting uninsurance. For the first time in my life. (How did I manage to be a poor black woman in America and never have qualified for unemployment before?)
I'm mostly happy. I'm in a state of change right now (home life, health life), so incorporating this change won't be so difficult. Besides, the atmosphere around the workplace has really changed in the last few weeks. I'm glad to get out of there without it seeming like I was ditching everyone.
I'm sure I'll find employment of some kind. Even if I have to do light industrial. That's what temp agencies are for, right? But my first order of business is the usual (I've been working for temp agencies for too long): send my revised resume to all of the local temp agencies, apply to the jobs I saw in the paper yesterday I qualified for, and really get comfortable with HotJobs & Monster. (Okay, this is the first time I'll be using online resources.) And lastly, I can't let my pride get in the way. My dad and I need to sign at least a 6-month lease. I have to keep things together until at least then. If I have to go back to fast food, I can. I have lots of experience!
I'm mostly relieved. I really do feel a sense of freedom. My mornings can be filled with something other than Title One of Washtenaw.
Wow! you sound like you are doing really well. It must be the right thing for your life right now. May the Universe bless you with a more enjoyable (and profitable) commitment.
