II Corinthians 4:4 -- The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.

iconolatry, n. [icon- image + -latry, fr. Gr. latreia service.] Image worship.

If Christ is the image of God, then Christianity is iconolatry. It is the worship of the image of God.

I think Christianity would be quite different if there were no images of God, if it were recognized that God might be utterly tremendously mysterious. I think people want more than that, to go on. So Christianity would also be much less widespread.
