God, if that were true, there'd be a lot more schizophrenics out there... virtually everyone I know under 50 has smoked pot, even the business people I work with, to judge from the frequent jokes about it which reveal they know a little too much to have just heard it from someone else.

The idea that marijuana causes schizophrenia was tossed out years ago.

The problem is that many doctors operate (with respect to ganja) on the basis of their social bias and not clinical knowledge.

On the other hand, though, it should be noted that marijuana does trigger episodes of schizophrenic illness in those who are already predisposed.

It is incorrect to say that marijuana does not carry adverse effects or risks; it is more accurate to say that such risks are likely insignificant for most people./i>

Those with a history of schizophrenia-like illness in the family should probably avoid marijuana. Those who have suffered episodes of such illness should definitely avoid marijuana.
