I recently bought Right Words, Right Order. And while I really appreciate what Stephen Dobyns has to say, the whole work has made me rather intimidated to write poetry right now.

Right Words, Right Order is a collection of essays on poetry, and Stephen Dobyns comes highly regarded. He pinpoints a lot of areas that make me go, "Yeah, okay! I'll have to keep my eye out for that." But there are so many.

One thing in particular that I enjoyed learning was the idea that surprise itself can be seen as a poetic device. I knew it was something that contributes to a poem being successful, but to think of it as a device itself makes me look at poetry in a new light.
