So, when I went out with my coworkers, we ate somewhere where there was a current Current. I finally took a look at it and found that there are several places in Ypsi that have karaoke. Just what I've been looking for! Also, I saw that there was a writing group that was meeting tonight. After making sure I could go to both the group and karaoke, I set out early in the evening and got back fairly late (i.e., now).

The writing group was small, but apparently it was large by normal standards. There were three people who were there for the first time. I shared two of my poems ("The Difference" and "The Feminist Submissive") and found myself shaking bodily as I did so. I never used to shake so much when I'm nervous. I don't like this newly acquired trait.

I left the writing group with a good feeling, then found my way relatively easily to Powell's Pub in Ypsi. I was a bit nervous, but in a different way. I didn't know if this would be a friendly place for a, well, dark face. It's sad that black people have to think about things like this, but we do. I thought, "Well, I'm here. I'll sing one song at least, then I can leave if I want."

I walked in and I'm pretty sure I was the only black person there. And I was alone. So that was a bit awkward. I went to the bar and started flipping through the song book. I set a $10 on the bar, but no one was waiting on me. The guy next to me said that he would order for me, but I said I wasn't in a hurry. After almost five minutes, he signaled the bartender for me, so I thanked him.

My first song was a Whitney Houston song--maybe not the best first choice. I haven't done karaoke in almost (if not more than) two years. I'm a bit rusty. I did the nervous shaking thing a little. After I sang my second song ("Midnight Train to Georgia"), someone--a black guy (one came in!) who was obviously with a chick--ordered me a drink, I guess his way of saying "good job". I thanked him several times. That was a song I'm pretty used to singing at karaoke, so I was more relaxed and less shaky than before. I remembered how much I love singing.

By this time, I was chatting with the guy next to me at the bar. The chatter would go in spurts. I explained to him that I wasn't terribly good at conversation. I sang my third song ("Last Dance"), drank a glass of water, then said my goodbyes. The guy and I happened to exchange numbers. He said he might call "Thursday or Friday". That's pretty soon. So we'll see. He seems nice, if a little down on his luck. I promised him a game of pool; I can certainly keep my word on that, if nothing else.

So, yeah, me being social. Odd.

Oh, I love karaoke. It's one thing to sing in the privacy of your own room, but everything gets kicked up a notch when you step in front of a crowd. You've got to bring your A game. And all those other cliches. :)

It's fun. I'm going to enjoy going several times a week.
