It's "not ok" for the American people to be reminded that their countrymen are dying in deserts far away for a cause that is losing support every day as scandal after scandal breaks. However, it's "fine" to have one ex-president's coffin lying in state on TV, because most Americans have already forgotten that his shananigans in the middle east fueled radical fundamentalist movements, directly led to our recent involvement in Afghanistan, and served as a precedent to our current occupation of Iraq. That and he was a movie star.
It's weird to me that I've grown up in a time when the left was anything more than 0.1mm left of a somewhat conservative middle, rather than the left of socialists and communists of the 60s and 70s, when that "older" sort of left is the kind of environment I would have thrived in. I hear we have Reagan to thank for that shift in thinking.
