Personally, I'd rather have influence than power ;)
Power is the ability to force someone else to do something.. influence is the ability to suggest something and have someone do it of their own volition.
I may have the influence to make someone think twice about a particular course of action. I may not have the power to make them take or not take that course of action.
Influence, to me, is power that has a span of control in the free will of others, but lacks the power to compel.

If you influence someone, isn't that having power over someone?
