I've never really "gotten" talent shows (like Star Search) in general, either, unless it's something very highly specific like an MC battle (in which who "wins" is largely beside the point), as in most cases its comparing apples-to-oranges.
What art is "good" seems pretty subjective, so it's hard for me to view it in a competitive paradigm.
I used to watch Star Search when I was a child, back when Ed McMahon used to host the show. Then again, I also used to watch Dance Fever.
The thing about AI is that it's part talent show, part horse race. There's a reward, intangible as it may be, when the person you're rooting for advances to the next round.
I suppose you'd have some sort of system over the Internet? :) That might be even more ripe for abuse.
It appears that text messaging is the best way to make sure your vote counts. But for people like me who don't have cell phones, well, that option just isn't available. Plus, why should someone have to pay for their vote to count? The largest plus about using landlines is that the call is toll-free.
Hmm, maybe. That's how they did the Survivor vote last week, on the Internet, although I'm sure AI gets a lot more votes than that. Voting on the Internet would be free, wouldn't it? I mean, sure you pay for your Internet service, but you pay a monthly phone bill too... :-)
I honestly don't have a better system...just kind of thinking aloud. But, of course, we can't even figure out a reliable way to elect a President in this country, so how can we decide on the best singer?
I got sucked in by my Mom but after George Huff got voted off I quit watching. I love him. He has such a wonderful energy no matter what he sings. So now I don't care who wins. But yeah, I'm betting all that stuff is rigged anyway.
