I could come across this guy at any time in society; instead, we cross paths in [livejournal.com profile] challenging_god, of all places. I am utterly taken aback that people still think (and act?!) like this.

And I come across Ladies Against Feminism. That brightens my day.

And to top it all off, [livejournal.com profile] ytterbius reminds me of the abuse we don't (yet) get to see:
"I don't know how the hell these people got into our army," said Colorado Republican Sen. Ben Nighthorse Campbell after viewing what he called a fraction of the images.

"I saw cruel, sadistic torture," said Rep. Jane Harman, D-Calif., who said some of the images were of male prisoners masturbating. She said she saw a man hitting himself against a wall as though to knock himself unconscious.

Others said they saw images of corpses, military dogs snarling at cowering prisoners, women commanded to expose their breasts and sex acts, including forced homosexual sex.

"There were people who were forced to have sex with each other," said Rep. Gary Ackerman, D-N.Y.

Rep. Trent Franks, R-Ariz., said, "There were some pictures where it looked like a prisoner was sodomizing himself" with an object. He said blood was visible in the photograph.

Where did all the social advances of our supposedly civilized society disappear?

Heh... I think half my problem is that I have been surropunded by guys like that most of my life and know all too well what they are like and what they are capable of, and the nice people I know now are all convinced this is a tiny portion of humanity (when, in fact, they are everywhere) and that they surely can't manage to take away every right we have desperately fought for in the last century (they can and will, if we let them).

We haven't seen these pictures. The descriptions are scary enough.

I personally don't want American soldiers forcing extremely religious people into raping each other. That's just against about every ethical tenet I hold. No, I don't support the actions of the terrorists or insurgents, but they don't represent me.

Just because others don't play fair doesn't mean we don't have to. Torture is never acceptable.

Death is not the only scenario that calls for outrage.

you should look at them if you are going to make judgments on this war. well, at least that is what i think. and especially if you want to maintain any type of objectivity.

Why should I subject myself to what I know to be a terribly inhumane and disturbing picture? I don't need to know what it looks like when a man is beheaded in a slow fashion. I don't need to hear the screams. That's a good way to degrade my own humanity. I don't want to desensitize myself to such violence.

At least in the photos of the abuse scandal, the people aren't in the process of being killed.

our soldiers are human. and they are being put in an inhumane and unwinnable situation. and then we judge them.

to quote Oliver Stone:

how can we win if we are "...like them politicians in Washington trying to fight this war with one hand tied around their balls."

I don't want to know what murder looks like.

I never supported this war. The soldiers shouldn't be over there in the first place. Those reservists should have remained civilians.

I was against the first Gulf War, too.
