Odd couples at NMSU make fun of same-sex marriage

On Wednesday afternoon James Wolfe married a rock.
Underneath an arch of plastic flowers, Wolfe tied the knot with his betrothed — all in the name of satire.

As part of a daylong political awareness event at New Mexico State University, the College Republicans set up a booth to allow passersby to marry each other, an animal, any inanimate object or themselves.

The group was seeking to portray what they see as the absurdity in redefining marriage to allow same-sex couples to marry, President Rebekah Miller said.

[...] “That is so wrong. Do Republicans honestly think that gay people can be treated like they are second-class citizens?” asked Allie Schulz, a freshman and president of NMSU’s Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Friends. “How could you compare us to a rock?”

To mock the gay marriage booth, two male members of the College Democrats were the second couple to marry.

Gee, and I always thought the point of education was to get rid of ignorance.

Campus Republicans often serve as a counterexample.

this, is actually the first i've heard of it! i'm not involved much in the student activities. sometimes, i feel this is why. there was a '24 hrs of politics' event on wednesday with booths i guess. our newspaper (http://www.roundupnews.com/) had nothing significant to say about it.
