That's where I disagree. Marriage is not a civil institution. It is a social institution. It existed before this civil society and will likely exist after it. The root of the problem is that the government has interfered so much in the institution. Though it likes to pretend, it does not have the right to redefine marriage. If the civil institution that was created to give benefits to marriage because of the benefits marriage brought to the state has drifted so much that it needs redefinition to guarantee equality under the law, then it needs to be de-yoked from the institution of marriage.
