I took my hardened disposition and approached my boss today. Today is as good a day as any, I figured, maybe even better, since when I'm in a good mood I'm much more timid.

I asked him if he was happy with my performance, which he said he was. I explained that I'm very happy with what I do here and that I was wondering if he'd given any thought to hiring me on permanently. He said he had, but that he was waiting to see how the year was shaping up financially before he made a decision. He said he'd need to speak with the other boss and come up with some ideas. He explained that while it may be a bit cheaper to hire me on instead of continuing to pay the temp agency, the savings would be minimal once one accounted for the health benefits package. I said I understood, but at the same time I couldn't temp forever. If he's unable to offer me a position, I would need to look elsewhere for one.

So, the other boss comes back from vacation next week. We'll see how things progress.

For a while I've been upset/fed up that I'm basically being taken advantage of. My boss is getting a steal. I looked at this conversation as (finally) standing up for myself.

You go girl! I've always had a horrible time asking bosses what I deserve, but my first attempt at doing so this month proved surprisingly successful. I was meaning to ask for a raise in my basic salary - instead, not only did I get that, I now get a cut from ad sales.
