Jewish Group: Mormons Still Baptize Dead
Researchers say that Mormons have continued to posthumously baptize Jewish Holocaust victims into their faith despite a promise to discontinue the practice.
[...] The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has long collected names from government documents and other records worldwide for posthumous baptisms. Church members stand in to be baptized in the names of the deceased non-Mormons, a ritual the church says is required for them to reach heaven.
The practice is primarily intended to give salvation to the ancestors of Mormons, but many others are included, since the church believes that individuals' ability to choose a religion continues beyond the grave. Non-Mormon faiths have objected to the baptisms.
"It's ridiculous for people to pretend they have the key to heaven," said Rabbi Marvin Hier, dean and founder of the Simon Wiesenthal Center in Los Angeles. "And even if they say they want to do somebody a favor ... it's not a symbol of love. It's a symbol of arrogance."

Date: 2004-04-10 08:35 am (UTC)===I think that there should be a movement by all faiths to help "redeem" their souls (for valuable prizes...erm, wait...wrong script...(toss over shoulder)) to another path. Part of the problem is that they really have not had the chance to be shown other possibilities real well.
===They have stated that they feel that it is perfectly proper to baptise folks into their path without their stated permission. I say we honor their request. I think I will have to do some psychopomp (and circumstance) work to help their dead find other spiritualities that they might want to work through. I am not one to force such things, so they have a choice...but I would imagine that the Moromons of this life might be a little alarmed to hear of different groups doing such things. (grin)
===(Glances at Metaphorge, so you know who to Blame...I mean Thank, for my appearing here this day and hour. (Smiles broadly))

Date: 2004-04-10 10:46 am (UTC)they have thousands of pagans they have done it for.
i was done for a girl named Brigid who was born in ireland in 1434. trust me, they dont give a flying fuck who it is, they just MUST GIVE THEM SALVATION.
on another note, mormons DO think that the people they are baptized for have a CHOICE to accept it or not. i hope to high heaven my grandma rejected it and forgives me for what my mom made me do as a 13 year old.
