Mar. 18th, 2002 07:23 pmYou said your birthday is 2 / 24 / 1975

and that you were:
22 years old when Princess Diana died
20 years old at the time of Oklahoma City bombing
19 years old when O. J. Simpson was charged with murder
18 years old at the time of the bombing of the World Trade Center*

I was much too young to remember anything from the Bicentennial. (I do remember Stevie Wonder's Songs in the Key of Life, which came out only two years later.)
I have no memories of the Iran hostage situation.
I barely remember Reagan getting shot. I remember the SNL bits/episode MUCH more.
Sally Ride I never gave much a shit about. I don't remember Macintoshes until I was able to use one, which would have been sixth grade (1986). I think I was politically oblivious when I was 8. I was doing little-girl things then. I was in third grade, in my very first spelling bee, for example.
I remember the Challenger explosion quite vividly, because they stopped classes, let us go into the library, and watch the news as it was being reported. (And, not to bring up bad memories, but they kept showing the explosion over and over, just like they did with the WTC....)
The fall of the Berlin Wall I remember. I remember exactly where I was when I watched the news as it happened. (In fact, I was about six inches away from the TV screen... it was the only seat in the house I could claim as "mine"....)
I was a dove during Desert Storm. During school, I wore handmade buttons promoting peace. I was one of a select few of my schoolmates who opposed the military action.
The other stuff happened when I was in college, and thus held little meaning for me. In Grinnell, one gets sucked into a time hole, and little to no news reaches the campus. I could've cared less about O.J. Simpson (I didn't see the slow-moving car chase until well later that week); the first WTC bombing didn't seem all that important; the Oklahoma City bombing didn't seem that important except to non-Okies (and I mean that with all due respect). And, as F and I are fond to exclaim periodically, Princess Diana died within three days of Mother Theresa. I feel that the latter deserved much more attention, did more for the needy, and was all around probably a better person than the glitzy, glamorous, and attractive Princess Di.
