Robbins Jean, an Aristide youth organizer, criticized the United States for pressuring Aristide.

"You tell George W. Bush he is a hypocrite and an assassin because the terrorists are killing the Haitian people," Jean, 25, told a reporter near the National Palace, where hundreds of youths — armed with old rifles and pistols, machetes and even a dull, rusty ax — gathered to repel any rebels.

Haitian Capital Descends into Anarchy

It's easier for America to let Haiti fall and clean it up afterwards, than to commit troops to defend a suspect yet democratically elected government.

Hypocrisy is the word of the day.

He wouldn't even be in power if we hadn't intervened the last time.

He didn't govern in a democratic fashion.

It's thought that he rigged the elections.

It's not that the Aristide government is suspect but democratically elected, it's suspect that his government was democratically elected.

And I'd much rather France (or somebody else besides the US) mop up in Haiti. Iraq went so poorly despite plenty of time to plan; imagine how Bush and Rumsfeld would do without even time to make plans to ignore?

Well, the US likes setting up cardhouse democracies. Should they all fall?

If we set Haiti's government up, why are we content to see it fall?

I simply am trying to see it from the citizens' perspective--that they are supposedly in a democracy, so the rebels must be seen as domestic terrorists. The fact that the US went to war to stop a terrorist state in the making but will not lift many fingers to halt an actual terrorist action must make many Haitians very angry.

What time? What planning?

Based on what I heard on NPR, there really was planning--at least at the level of resource estimates--it was just ignored. The Bush administration wanted it to seem necessary yet cheap...
