Just when you think you're as stuffed as the chicken you just ate, along comes the chocolate-chip cookie-dough ice cream, and all of a sudden there's a little room left.

How does that happen?

It's because the satiety response works independently: you can be filled up on a salty food and still have room for something sweet.

According to the journal Appetite, it works for food textures, too.

Researchers at the University of California, Davis, compared responses to hard and soft versions of the same foods. For example, they compared the response to an apple with applesauce, or a ham and cheese sandwich on a baguette to the same sandwich on white bread.

They found that after eating a hard meal, people were less inclined to eat a hard dessert, and after a soft meal, they were less interested in a soft dessert.
