That would bother me less on a knee-jerk level, not to mention make it a scholarship actually feasible for the "real world", if it were some specific white group (Norwegians, British, whatever). There's nothing wrong with celebrating people who share one's heritage. "White" isn't a heritage. (Of course, neither is African-American just one heritage, but history's made it just a little bit harder than it is for whites to trace to a specific country or region.)
However, if Mr. Mattera wants so desperately to make a statement, he should put his money where his mouth is and give up that juicy $5k scholarship before bitching about it.
I think that is a wonderful idea, and a great statement to make. In the neighborhood I grew up in, the residents were primarily caucasian and poverty stricken to a man, woman, and child. I can pretty much guarantee not a single child will be going to college. Even as a minority myself, I have never understood why there were special grant and loan benefits for minorities.. as I understand it now, allegedly it is to ease statistical proverty which apparently is highest amongst minorities.. but if that is the intent, perhaps the money that goes into those programs should be re-routed into programs that look at yearly income instead of the color of skin. *shrugs* Just a thought.. good form on finding another interesting article! ~Zeph the Pinko~
