Bush said he supported his country during the Vietnam War era, but called the conflict "a political war."

"I supported my government," he said. "I did. And would have gone had my unit been called up, by the way."

"The thing about the Vietnam War that troubles me as I look back was it was a political war," he said. "We had politicians making military decisions, and it is lessons that any president must learn, and that is to the set the goal and the objective and allow the military to come up with the plans to achieve that objective."

I read a chapter from McNamara's book In Retrospect while in SE asia when i was bored waiting on a boat ride. According to the book McNamara says he believes Kennedy would never have agreed to go to full scale war in Vietnam and that there were severe lapses in judgment in relation to the war because many important questions were not asked or investigated. The one chapter I read was quite illuminating I'd read the whole book if I had the time but I thought I'd pass this along in case you were interested in finding out more on this. I think the author would have agreed with bush.

Oh yeah and other interesting thing he said was that he believed LBJ was "a bully" who "exploited people's weaknesses". Interesting.

Well, the entire interview was illuminating, mainly because Bush did not succeed in appearing presidential.

What took me aback was his assertion that Vietnam was a political war; by doing so, he implied that the current war is not political. And that is just amazing to me.
