So, somehow I find myself involved in a Magic: the Gathering league.

It's odd.

I'm playing white, blue, black. Now, really: can you believe that? :)

Friday night I had my first real league match. I have a 60-card deck, and since I was playing three colors, my opponent had decided to dispense with his green support and just come after me with one color: white.

F had warned me about his deck. "Alan's deck is the one I'm most worried about," he told me.

5 matches, five ante cards I'd probably lose. I was not confident with my deck at all. During the initial trading session, I didn't luck out, and I had ended up with my main two colors being so weak that I had to add a tertiary color, black. But by the time I realized my bad fortune, I'd unfortunately already traded away my really powerful black cards.

The only two things I had going for me were: a) a theme (discard cards/gain life from discarded cards), and b) an elite front line (75% flyers).

Well, you know how white vs. white matches go. Each of our five games lasted at least thirty minutes. Talk about War of Attrition. And Alan did have a good deck, well-built, one that will do well in the rest of the league, I think. But amazingly, I held my own against him and came out with 2 wins out of 5. I even won an ante I'd drooled over when he'd put it in play before.

I was ready to lose. It was very strange to not lose as thoroughly as I'd imagined. :)

Anyway, it seems that perhaps Magic will work its way back into my blood. Arriving home from playing, F and I talked about the matches we'd fought, our prospects next week... odd to be talking in that dialect again. "Yeah, it's red red two, flying, sacrifice a land to do two damage. And check out the flavor text." No sane person can translate this.

You know, I think MtG is as addicting as anything you've played with, IMHO.

That amuses me, somehow. yes, Im in an odd mood :)

*laugh* I'd say Magic is as addictive as anything else, but its rewards are a little more indirect.

Magic is great for compulsive types, especially compulsive buyers. Those would be the people who'd really have a bad time with a Magic addiction....

*smile* Nothing wrong with being a geek, you know.

Besides, it's an umbrella term. :)

No! Get out now, while you still can!

Just don't end up homeless on the street giving handjobs for Magic cards.

Okay, so I'm a geek to. I spent the weekend at a gaming convention. I feel proud that I didn't play even one card or board game.

okay, could not resist.

I still pick up CCGs that catch my eye. Magic I have not played in... well.... a while. though the terminogoly is still not alien to me. Some is, the phasing and such. But Gaming Geek and proud I am. :)
