The linguistic world and the physical world do not always correspond.

Certainly, the linguistic world and the metaphysical world do not always correspond.

Am I off base?

That guy is just a hyper-rationalist poser. It's not suprising to find that sort of person in a philosophy community. Anyone who appeals to dictionary definitions as the final authority for any reason other than to clear up a misunderstanding is usually an asshat.

The best response to his dictionary quoting is to say: "Well, you're an excellent point of data in favor of the Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis."

In many ways, "asshat" is funnier than "assclown". I should use both words more often in conversation.
