We're Jacksonian children.

He was a pivotal president, our 7th president (lucky 7, huh). He lived during a pivotal time period (1767-1845) not just in terms of American history, but history period. Sociologically, philosophically, economically, all sorts of forces were coalescing and combining.

I came across this fascinating biography of Andrew Jackson after I pondered a quote of his. The introduction will give you all you need to know if you want to continue reading. Personally, I'm up to "Henry Clay and the Bank Wars".

This man was wounded emotionally in so many ways it's hard to fathom. I can't help but sympathize with him. His political career was such a combination of good luck and happenstance it's amazing to contemplate what could have happened (like "what if Hitler had been killed in WWI", e&).

He lived during the real America. And back then, there weren't any antidepressants.

*laughs*

I'll come back later and explain what I meant about "real America". I knew someone would say something about that....
