Treasury Seeks Probe Into Papers Taken by O'Neill
The U.S. Treasury has asked the U.S. inspector general's office to investigate how a possibly classified document appeared on Sunday in a televised interview of ex-Treasury Secretary Paul O'Neill, a department spokesman said on Monday.
"It's based on the (CBS program) '60 Minutes' segment, and I'll be even more clear -- the document as shown on '60 Minutes' that said 'secret,"' Treasury spokesman Rob Nichols told reporters at a weekly briefing.
**
So they're not denying that the document exists, or was dated the date it was (January 2001). They're not actually addressing the real import of the document; they're persecuting the person who brought it to light.
The White House was reluctant to investigate the leak of an undercover FBI agent, but they're gung ho about pursuing this "leak".
O'Neill is almost certainly guilty of violating laws regarding presidential memos and so forth. But at the same time, I admire the fact that he still came forward and is willing to take whatever punishment this administration seems bent on giving.
I saw the 60 Minutes segment. It was pretty damning.
