The sad thing is, because of the longstanding spill in the Gulf, this news item will not register with the national public. Michigan's woes have been particularly acute, with Asian carp threatening the ecosystem, unemployment at much higher levels than any other state during this recession (until very recently), the embarrassment of a felonious mayor, &c.
I believe I'm one of the few Michiganians who admire our governor, Ms. Jennifer Granholm. She's a smart cookie who doesn't mince words. She aided then-Senator Obama during his candidacy by preparing him for debate; also, she made Obama's first shortlist of SCOTUS nominees. She inherited a swamp of problems from the previous (coincidentally, Republican) governor, John Engler. The locals love to hate Granholm, but I think she's done a lot just to hold steady, considering the straits in which the state found itself at the time of her inauguration.
Yet, despite this amount of respect, I am just astounded at the lack of clout she holds when it comes to appealing to the federal government for help. I suspect that Obama is declining to help with regard to the Asian carp because of his ties to Illinois politics & business. Granholm can be tough as nails when she wants; while I'm sure that's not necessarily the best tack to take when attempting to persuade the President of something, I should still think a personal relationship as such they share should have weight. That it doesn't bodes ominously for the immediate & long-term future of this state.
