Don't tell me when I cannot use a semicolon. Believe me, I learned the appropriate uses for my favorite punctuation mark many years ago.

I'm a grammar enforcer for a reason. Now dance to the strain of the 1990s radio hit jangling in my head. (Anybody know the artist of that earworm?)

Agreed. Looks fine to me; besides, I, too, like semicolons.

Aren't they fun? People overuse commas, in my opinion; folks could create more complexity and texture in their sentence construction simply by effectively employing semicolons instead.

I do think the first paragraph of A Tale of Two Cities strains such use, though. I mean, wow.

There's an opening sentence of Hemingway's which gave my entire class conniption fits--a classic example of when clauses have clauses--given that the 'sentence' was well over 75 words in length. It was for one of his short stories; mercifully, I've now eradicated from my memory the name of that particular abomination.

Ha! If you think of it, I'd love to know.

I haven't read much Hemingway. I read Old Man and the Sea and generally was turned off to his writing. His style, as far as I can tell, was bombastic and boring (not necessarily in that order).

You're right; don't listen to them.

I'll take your advice. :) At times, though, it's difficult not to take umbrage.

You are one of the nicest grammar enforcers ever! Most of the time grammar enforcers -though necessary - especially to knucklehead writers like me - are not so fun.

And frequently begin sentences with Actually..... just like that snooty person who replied to your post.

Can you please start a revolution of nice grammar enforcers- for those of us who were traumatized out of grammar by terrifying, terrifying nuns?

:) xoxoxo

Aw, thanks. :) No need to denigrate your own syntactical skills, though. You're a great writer. I enjoy reading your work.
