Though definitely rude and overstepping his boundaries by a large margin, the reaction from the media and the legal system is as equally beyond ludicrous, and enters the realm of tyrannical.
"Stephens, of Stone Mountain, is charged with felony cruelty to children."
That means this man looks to spend several years of his life in a federal prison, where his case will be misrepresented by angry inmates looking for prison drama to wile away their time. This man could very possibly be killed for this, and will certainly see his life ruined.
"Mathis(mother's aunt) said the girl's mother was shaken up over the incident. 'She's as well as to be expected," Mathis said. "Right now she's just trying to calm down.'"
Meanwhile, we have a mother who is milking the media attention for all she is worth, even having her sister come to live with her and take phone calls on her behalf. We should all feel sorry for the traumatized mother of this poor child, but instead I am struck with how deeply affected she seems to be by something a child merely 2 years of age has already gotten over.
All said, the reaction to this event says some really sad things about our society. :(
