I've never looked into the hoax thing because I don't care one way or the other (a man on the moon is really only emotionally significant), but I have wondered if maybe they faked the pictures, just to be sure they had pretty ones for the sake of cold war propaganda. That would tie up all loose ends -- the fake elements some notice (if they exist), the astronauts who actually went there, the military mindset of the era, and how surprisingly pretty the pictures actually are.

But then again, who cares...we've got rovers on mars, geosynchronous satellites, SOHO staring at the sun 24/7, the Hubble Telescope, New Horizons heading out to the Kuiper Belt. All of that stuff is way cooler than a footprint on the moon, IMO.

unless all that's faked too! which seems rather unlikely really. i agree about how cool the other stuff is, but i think the footprint's pretty damn cool too, but mostly costly i want to put one next to it probably
