hussy, a pert girl. (English.) Short for hus-wife, which is put for house-wife (like husband for house-band).

Husband

I always thought that husband was a contraction of house-bound, but I found out it relates to house-freeholder. I'm still not sure about the meaning of the root word.

I don't have my etymological dictionary with me at the moment, but when I get home I'll look it up.

husband. (Scandinavian.) Icelandic husbondi, the master of a house, the goodman; short for husbuandi = Icelandic hus, house; buandi, dwelling in, present participle of bua, to dwell; see Boor. Derivative husband-man, husband-ry.

Husband and housewife are derived from House.

I'll post Boor in a separate entry, because it's got some interesting things going on itself.

ilike etymology, but i likemade up etymology like 'i wonder what this word originates from' and then just thinking about it, rather than looking it up. i hate looking things up.
