3 from Mich. arrested in Neb. after pot is found

The State Patrol said Tuesday that a trooper stopped an eastbound sport utility vehicle on Monday for speeding on Interstate 80 in north Lincoln.

A drug dog taken to the scene alerted to the smell of drugs coming from a camper the SUV had been towing.

The patrol says 34 bales of marijuana were found in the camper, totaling 727 pounds.

The street value was estimated at $750,000.

My question is, if you have that much contraband in your car, why in the hell would you speed? I know that Nebraska is a boring state to drive through, but come on.

750k for 727 pounds. 65 an ounce. Either it was amazingly crappy pot, or the nebraska cops have decided to be more realistic when it comes to stating prices for bulk drugs. For years, the DEA has tried to show everything at max possible value, it's nice seeing somewhat more realistic numbers.

(I can picture old DEA math calling it 4,652,000 value, if 1/8ths were sold at 50...)

Also, eesh. I always thought it was a standard rule to never commit two crimes at the same time.

Exactly. Make sure your lights all work, drive the speed limit. Beware the midwest!

I always hate to hear when there are big Marijuana drug busts. It's such a waste of taxpayer money and police resources, IMO.

I wish that the article said how fast they were speeding; my theory is that you might actually be safer if you go just above the speed limit(as long as other traffic is always going faster), staying at 5mph above or less, that way you appear like you have nothing to hide and it's not worth it for the cops to pull you over.

I wonder if the driver had the same idea, in which case my theory is out the window. ON the other hand, he might've just not been paying attention, and/or the road was going downhill and there happened to be a cop at that spot..

the speed limit there is like 75. were they exceeding the trailer/camper limit? that has to be like, 65. but everybody else, including the semis, are doing 80 or 85 on I80. I can see how you would be tempted, and doing the limit under those circumstances is pretty conspicuous all by itself.
oh wait, they had entered lincoln. speed trap.
